To capture the essence or spirit of a subject – to create an image in as few spontaneous brush strokes as possible – this is what challenges and intrigues me with the process and beauty of sumi art.

Using brush and ink with its varying tones to transport this flow of energy which ultimately comes from my own spirit, provides inspiration to further my explorations with ink as well as other mediums.  I simplify shapes and seek strength in expressive brush strokes, color, and tonal value as I strive to express a subject’s essence.
