Experience the serenity of expression through the techniques of sumi painting.  Students will explore creative forms of self-expression using sumi (black ink) to interpret images as well as changes in color through tonal value.

Use of traditional tools, materials, brush methods, and approach to content as well as the mounting process will be taught. Students will be introduced to Asian brush calligraphy, the ancient art from which sumi-e (sumi painting) evolved, and will become familiar with the secrets of sumi-e, the ancient eastern tradition of self-expression.

Beginning students will learn brushwork through studying the Four Paragons (the four traditional subjects of bamboo, wild orchid, chrysanthemum, and plum blossom and branch).

Continuing students will explore a variety of subjects and techniques.
